Information on each of the almost 30 forms of visa and permission stamps enabling holders to remain in Japan can only be obtained through the Immigration Services. Contact and visits to the Immigration Service should be scheduled for normal office hours Monday to Friday, and foreign resident registration staff at local city / ward offices will advise on which department or section it is necessary to visit in any given situation.
Should a matter require minimal legal registration (renewal of Alien Registration Cards or registration of birth, death and marriages / divorce) these can usually be carried out at the same local government offices. - NB: Tax issues can also be carried out at the local level.
Anyone unsure on how to amend or update status of residence (visa) issues, should first contact the local city office.
